Visual Studio 2026 launched on January 20, 2026, and it's Microsoft's most significant IDE release in years.

Not because of flashy AI features (though those exist). Because it finally addresses long-standing developer pain points while laying the groundwork for the future.

Here's what actually matters.

.NET 10 and C# 14: Full Support from Day One

For the first time, Visual Studio ships on the same day as the major .NET release.

C# 14 Highlights

1. Primary Constructors for All Types (Expanded)

C# 12 added primary constructors for class, but C# 14 extends them to struct and record struct:

My Experience: I tried asking it to refactor a legacy SOAP client to use modern HttpClient.

Result:

  • 60% correct
  • Missing timeout handling
  • Didn't dispose HttpClient properly
  • Hardcoded values instead of configuration

I spent more time fixing it than if I'd done it manually.

2. Performance Profiler UX Hasn't Improved

The CPU/Memory profiler is functionally the same as VS 2022. For 2026, I expected:

  • Flame graphs (like Chrome DevTools)
  • Allocation tracking (like dotMemory)
  • Continuous profiling (like Datadog)

Still missing.

3. No Built-In Docker Compose Support

You can debug containers, but there's no first-class Docker Compose experience.

Want to:

  • Spin up database + Redis + API in Docker
  • Debug the API in VS

You need: Third-party extensions or manual configuration.

For 2026, this should be built-in.

Should You Upgrade?

Yes, if:

  • You're using .NET 10 or C# 14
  • You work on ARM64 Windows
  • You want TypeScript 7's faster compiler
  • You're curious about MCP servers

No, if:

  • You're on .NET 6/8 and not upgrading yet
  • Your team hasn't migrated to C# 12 yet
  • You're happy with VS 2022

Visual Studio 2026 isn't a must-have for everyone. But if you're on the latest .NET, it's a solid upgrade.
